Good Afternoon Pirate Families,

It is a great school year to be a Pirate! Macks Creek School is looking forward to an exciting new year. As students are preparing to return to school tomorrow, I would like to share a few considerations relative to everyone’s safety:

First, in light of triple-digit heat indexes that will be experienced during our first few days back to school, we have made some accommodations to our dismissal procedures for bus riders. As you can imagine, it often takes longer to load our buses the first few days. In order to ensure our bus riders are not seated in the hot parking lot for any period of time at the end of the school day, all bus riders will be dismissed to our air-conditioned gymnasium where they will meet their bus driver. Once we are certain we have every student correctly matched with his/her bus driver, we will release each group to their bus in a staggered dismissal. As soon as all of the students are on board, each driver will depart campus. We will also issue all bus riders a bottle of cold water to drink on the ride home. We ask parents of young children to be near the bus stop to assure each child will head directly inside and out of the heat as soon as possible.

Second, as you may be aware, Macks Creek School has a contract with the Camden County Sheriff's Department to have a Deputy serve as our School Resource Officer (SRO) every day school is in session and during various after school activities. The County recently informed us that veteran Deputy Sgt. Larry Bowling will serve as a our temporary SRO during the opening weeks of school. The Sheriff's Department is searching for a permanent deputy who will serve our students for the rest of the school year. We are grateful to Sheriff Helms, Sgt. Bowling, and the entire Sheriff's department for working to keep our students safe!  In addition to serving as a liaison between the Sheriff's Deparment and our school, our SRO works in conjunction with our administrators, teachers and staff to implement our school’s safety plan each and every day.

Our faculty and staff have worked very hard to prepare for a great year with our amazing students! I hope everyone has a fantastic first day of school tomorrow.

Thank you!

Dr. Josh Phillips
